Elmira Hartman, daughter of James and Mira Thompson, was born June 4, 1853, in Deedsville, Miami County, Indiana. The daughter of a Methodist minister, at an early age she joined the Methodist church, and later united with the Oswego Baptist church of which she had been a faithful member for the past twenty-four years.
She was united in marriage to Benjamin F. Hartman on December 9, 1871, and to this union were born nine children, two of whom died in infancy. Surviving are J. Fred Hartman, Charles F. Hartman, Lewis C. Hartman, Mrs. Milo Stookey, Mrs. Ervin Ferverda, Mrs. B.F.Lentz and George A. Hartman, all of whom reside in the vicinity of Oswego. Her husband preceded her in death twenty-five years.
Besides caring for her own family, she made a home for an orphan niece and two younger sisters.
She departed this life March 25, 1929, at the age of 75 years, 9 months and 21 days. She leaves to mourn their loss, two half sisters in California, seven children, twenty-one grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
As long as she was able, she always put the welfare of the sick and needy before her own, and will be remembered by many for her sympathy and assistance in times of trouble. The grandchildren pay tribute to her as an understanding friend, interested iin their welfare, believing in them and inspiring them to be worthy of her faith in them. The children mourn their loss as one concerned primarily in the happiness and well-being of her family, a wise counselor, a loving guide, a wonderful mother.
Funeral service was held March 27, 1929, at the Oswego Baptist church, Rev. B.H. Truman offficiating. The Scripture lesson read was Proverbs 31:10-31 and the text was "Her Children Arise Up and Call Her Blessed." Proverbs 31:28
Burial was made at the Oswego cemetery.
