153 | EJK said his grandfather's middle name was Joseph. But his headstone reads "John F. Kalny." EJK said the Kalneys and the Mikes families didn't get along so this family immigrated to the US. Newspaper Article from Murphysboro Newspaper or St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Miss Alberta Maes, Passed Away Sunday, After Short Illness. Young Woman, Had Been Patient in Hospital About Three Weeks. Miss Albert Maes, well known young woman of this city, passed away in St. Andrew's hospital at 1:50 a. m. Sunday, February 2, after a three weeks' illness. Miss Maes had been in ill health since the time of her mother's death, December 19, and had gradually grown worse but showed a sight improvement last week and the news of her deathis a shock to her many friends. The deceased was 23 years of age at the time of death and had lived in Murphysboro her entire life time. She was employed at Brown shoe plant. She is survived by one sister, Mildred, at home and the following brothers, Charles and Robert, at home. Joe of New York City, George of Chicago, IL and Al of St. Louis, MO. the mother passed away December 19, 1935. Miss Maes was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock from the church with the Rev. Father J. J. Taggart officiating, and burial will be made in S Andrew's cemetery. 180 | Alias: REFN43 Article from Murphysboro Newspaper May 28, 1922 ANTHONY MAES DIES SUDDENLY AT BORDEN HOME Anthony ("Tony") Maes died suddenly at the home of Joe Borden on North 16th street, Sunday evening. Tony Maes had been to church in the afternoon with his wife and had gone home and later made a visit to Joe Borden's. He was taken suddenly ill about 5 o'clock, and died after and illness of and hour and half. Mr. Maes' unexpected death isattributed to Bright's (*) disease of acute form. Durning the brief period of his extremity of illness he suffered four convulsions. Consciousness returned at periods between the convulsions. The stricken man's mortal conditionwas made known to him. He realized his file was going fast and kissed member's of his family good bye. His final message to these was one of sorrow that he must leave them. Tony Maes was born in St. Clair County, IL., January 8, 1876. The deceased had been a resident of Murphysboro for the past 12 to 14years. He was employed formerly at the Foss Martell & Co. store, and when the Herrin Supply Co. took over the store he remained with the force as salesman. He was a proficient salesman and devoted to his home and church. The deceased was a member of the Retail Clerk's Union and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and of St. Andrew's congregation. Mr. Maes leaves to mourn his death besides his wife, seven children, all at home. The children range in age from 2 months to 17 years. These are Joseph, George, Mildred, Aloysius, Alberta, Charles and Robert. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. John Maes, of this city, and five brothers and two sisters: James and Louis of Chester, Charles and Nikol of Somerset township, Leonard of Murphysboro, Mrs. A. Mileur and Mrs. F. Dixon, both of this city. Funeral services will be held Tuesdaymorning at 9 o'clock at St. Andrew's Church. Interment in the Catholic Cemetery. (*) Bright's disease or Nephritis is the general term for inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the Kidney. Which may be acute, chronic or intermittent and is generally progressive. Advances cases are often associated with and contribute to hypertension, arteriosclerosis, and heart failure. Tony was 46 years, 4 months, 20 days old when he died. | Anthony Severin Maes

He was born in St.Clair County in 1868, and had lived in Murphysboro most of his life. He was a farmer in Somerset Township for many years, and was later a watchman for the Murphysboro Grocery Company. He was married in 1926 to Lena Boudet, who survives with one daughter, Mrs. Loretta Walker of Murphysboro, one step-daughter, Alberta Boudet of Chicago, three step-sons, Navarre Boudet of Belleville and Carles and Robert Boudet, both of Murphysboro, two brothers Nick Maes of Murphysboro and Louis Maes of Chester and two sisters, Mrs. Amela Mileur of Murphysboro and Mrs. Julia Dixon of Cape Girardeau. Three brothers proceeded him in death. Charles was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church. The body will remain at the Meyer Funeral Home until the hour of services. J S &S shoe company as a clerk or bookkeeping from Aug.2,1916 to June 15, 1955. As a young woman she soloed in the church choir. She sang in the church choir into her 80s. She lived several years in California in the 1970s, helping when her niece went back to work. But she missed St. Louis and moved back there when her grandnieces were in highschool. She was wonderful at baking. She was a very fastidious housekeeper. She always said her daily prayers.
